AUBURN, Ala. — July 14, 2026 — The Auburn community is mourning the loss of Hugh W. Smith, 82, who passed away nearly two weeks after sustaining critical injuries in a serious vehicle crash in Tallapoosa County. His death has left family, friends, and loved ones grieving the loss of a man remembered for his kindness, resilience, and the many lives he touched.

Details of the Crash

According to Alabama State Troopers, the crash occurred around 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, on U.S. 280, approximately two miles southeast of Camp Hill.

Authorities reported that Smith was driving a Toyota Tacoma when it was struck by a Lexus IS250 driven by Cheaney M. Keel, 23, of Alexander City. Following the impact, Smith’s vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree.

Emergency crews transported Smith to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, and he was later transferred to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery as he fought for recovery. Despite extensive medical efforts, Smith succumbed to his injuries on July 14, 2026.

Also injured in the crash was Wanda Smith, 79, who received treatment following the collision. The circumstances remain under investigation.
